Last week, amid the madness that was Hurricane Irene, I traveled to 30 Rockefeller Center for a segment on NBC’s TODAY show! In this fun back to school segment, four current or recent college students (including myself) offered a variety of advice for incoming students. Naturally, I was given the tech beat.

Those in search of a college laptop, should look for 3 things: affordability, light weight, and a long battery life. The toughest challenge here is to find a laptop that displays all these qualities without compromising usability. Here are my recommendations:
- Toshiba Portege ($800)
- HP Dm1z ($400)
- Apple MacBook Air ($949)
- Apple iPad ($500) – It’s not a laptop, but it’s a comprable replacement for first- and second-year students.
- Alienware M11x ($1100)
Other guests from the segment also had great advice! Scott Gamm from HelpSaveMyDollars.com offered financial advice, Donna Kim at DonnaDaily.com gave excellent study tips, and Victoria Reitano, a multimedia journalist, rounded up the best gear for any college student’s dorm room.
